Hello Frederick Residents!

I got involved in the Community Task Force Fixin Freds' Roads due to washoard vibrations I felt when driving on Frederick roads. I wanted to see how much the state of Colorado allocates per year for road maintenance, as well as new roads construction in Frederick, When I found out at a roads committee meeting the city of Frederick only recieves 2.9 million dollars a year from all the taxes the city is entitled to collect for a year time frame I was shocked. At the same meeting everyone was informed it costs $450,000 to repair one mile of existing road, one million dollars to construct a brand new road one mile long. The city of Frederick has over 100 miles of roads. With a budget of 2.9 million dollars from taxes collected which equates to 6.4 miles of roads can be repaired in one year collecting 2.9 million in taxes.  No new road construction can occur with a budget of 2.9 million dollars. 

Passing a 1% sales tax will cost $1 on every $100 dollars spent for the 1% sales tax initiative. The proposed 1% sales tax would generate an additional 4 million dollars every year. There are two ordinances for this sales tax. The first ordinance is the 1% sales tax initiative for the city of Frederick. The second ordinance is to be able to bond money from the passing of the 1% sales tax.  This means a large portion of the total amount estimated to be collected from the 1% sales  can be used immediately to repair, construct new turn lanes, widen shoulders on existing roads and construct new roads. The city doesn’t have to save up tax payers money for 4 to 5 years and then use the money for repairing and constructing new roads in Frederick, pay as you go strategy.  Passing the 1% sales tax initiative allows the city to bond the entire amount on the 1% sales tax initiative to repair, construct new roads and other areas of existing roads needed NOW, as opposed to having to wait years to complete repairing roads. The city is going to save a tremendous amount of money on construction costs, as well as labor by being able to repairs roads NOW.

Having the opportunity to work on many issues as a Trustee. It gave me the chance to truly see the areas in Frederick that needed attention. 8 years of speaking to our residents and reading the results of surveys sent out by Frederick, the condition of our roads was a subject that always finished as a top 3 issue.

A 1% sale tax will give Frederick the opportunity to correct and or repair the roads and streets within Frederick in the future. Without this tax Fredericks roads will continue to become worse.

My wife & I have lived in Frederick for 22 years and will need to pay this additional 1% sales tax, just like everyone else. The Fixin FREDS Roads Task force can answer any questions you may have.
